What might be the problem if my northern blots show very weak signals or have lots of smeary stuff?

transfer problems, running conditions, RNase presence, low radio-nucleide incorporation (or DIG if you are using it), not enough substrate (DIG), annealing temp too high or too low... etc,
Pretty much anything. Can you post your protocol?
