# How to convert ng/ul to ug/ul - (Nov/18/2010 )

Hi there

I know it seems like such an easy concept, but if someone could give a helping hand in helping me understand the concept, I would greatly appreciate it!

So from this website, I gather that if I have a starting concentration of 500 ng/ul and my desired concentration is 0.1 ug/ul with a final volume of 100 ul, the amout of sample to dilution water would be 20 mL solution and 80 mL water.

1 ng/ul = 0.001 ug/ul

Use V1 x C1 = V2 x C2 (where V = volume and C= concentration) Keep the units the same (i.e. if using ul, keep it all in ul).

0.1 ug/ml is 100 ng/ml. 500 ng/ml is 5 x 100 ng/ml meaning you have to dilute 5-fold => 20 ul + 80 ul

let just show you an easy way to convert between units :
ng to ug ...
convert the nanogram to grams, then the grams to micrograms ...

for example 5 ng = ?? ug

5 ng x 1 g = 5 x 10 ^ -9 g
10 ^ 9 ng

(5 x 10 ^ -9 )g x (10 ^ 6) ug = 5 x 10 ^ -3 ug
1 g

so 5 ng = 0.005 ug

without the need to memorize anything as most students do ...
