Lysogenization Kit glucose instead of maltose? - (Oct/22/2010 )

Hi everyone,

I need to prepare some DE3 cells, so I have a lysogenization kit. At one point I need to supplement the LB with 0.2% maltose. So my question is: can I use glucose instead of maltose? I know that maltose is formed of 2 glucoses so I figured it could work out but I'd kinda like to be sure. (we already have glucose and sucrose in the lab, it's to avoid buying/waiting for the maltose  )

So if anyone could help me, that would be great.

thx

No, the purpose of the maltose is to induce the production of maltose transport proteins on the surface of the cell, which are used as an entry point for the phage. Glucose will not induce these genes and will not be effective.
