Localization of kanamycin resistance protein - (Aug/02/2010 )

Dear people,

does anyone know where the neomycin phosotransferase (nptII, the common kanamycin resistance found in many cloning vectors) is localized in E. coli?
Is it a cytoplasmic protein or is located in the periplasmic space? Does anyone know relevant literature on this topic?

Many thanks for your help!

Best regards,
p
