Phylogeny and housekeeping gene - GAPDH sequence data for phylogeny (Jul/12/2010 )

Hi all,

I wish to know if a cDNA sequence of gapdh gene can be used to deduce phylogeny information abt closely related species.I have come across various papers that use nuclear or mitochondrial DNA data only.

Thanks and Regards,

Nirupa

Hi Nirupa,

Have you tried to build a phylogeny using Gapdh? Once you have your Gapdh DNA sequences from different species, you can use MEGA (http://www.megasoftware.net/) to come up with a phylogeny using different phylogeny estimation methods.

Then perhaps you can compare with phylogenies built using ribosomal DNA or compare it to the ones built from the papers you have come across. It might be that Gapdh has a different molecular clock than mitochondrial DNA.

Hope that helps,

z
