Freezing Solution - (Jun/03/2010 )

Dear ALL,

In general, freezing medium contains DMSO with culture medium, I would like to know whether I can use DMSO with PBS or not? What is the function of culture medium in freezing medium solution?

I suspect that DMSO/PBS would work, but not particularly well. If you added some FCS to the PBS, it would probably work better.

The medium has a lot of components that mimic the inter-cellular fluid composition meaning that the cells can get essential nutrients from the medium, whereas PBS is essentially just a saline solution with the same osmolality as a cell, but has nothing that will allow the cells to grow/divide.
