Oxidase test - (May/25/2010 )

I've got an exam coming up and have a question about e.coli. I've read that enteric bacteria always are supposed to have a negative oxidase test but at the same time e.coli is a facultative aerobe and able to consume oxygen. How does it manage this without the enzyme cytochrome c oxidase? What have I missed? Would really appreciate some help.

PS. cytochrome c isnt needed for every bacterium...

I suppose you saw a model of respiration using O2 of a certain bacterium that uses cytochrome c, but not every bacterium has the same system.

The cytochrome c complex is not the only electron transport chain involved in respiration -- see, for example, the Krebs cycle (aka the citric acid cycle).
