antibiotics for preventation of mycoplasma contamination - (May/23/2010 )

we usally use pen/strep in cell culture but recently we had some mycoplasma cintamination. which antibiotic is recommanded for preventing mycoplasma contamination in cell culture media?

You will be better off throwing out your contaminated cells and getting some fresh ones in rather than treating for mycoplasma.

In your routine cell culture you should not be using antibiotics at all as they mask cryptic contaminations that will be affecting your results.

It might depend on cell culture you are using... However, in my lab, we are using pen/strep/glu and it worked fine ... What kind of cells are you using?

The few agents that do work on mycoplasma, work slowly and are expensive. Furthermore they place a selection pressure on your cells that can make permanent changes to cellular phenotype
