delivery to rats brain:Toubles with my osmotic pump... - (Mar/02/2010 )

Hi.
I am performing drugs delivery to brain with a therapeutic coktail in nude rats (rnu/rnu).But I think that the pump does not work well: deliver 1ml per day instead of 240ul/day (and my rats soon die) I followed the manufacture´s especifications.I incubated the pump for 4 hours prior the surgery, but nothing, still does not work appropriately.
Has someone worked with these pumps (and with the same problem)?
Can somebody suggest me another delivery system to rat´s brain?
Thanks in advance¡
Good luck.

My lab uses ALZET pumps as well. We've had great luck with them (in hamsters) and the few times problems came up, it turned out to be due to human error. It's worth a shot mix up more solution with lower viscosity.

Another option is to order animals that have already been surgically altered. Taconic.com is a reputable, AAALAC accredited source for such animals: http://www.taconic.com/wmspage.cfm?parm1=667

Hello, I'm the Product Manager for the ALZET Osmotic Pumps and would be more than happy to help troubleshoot with you. The ALZET pumps have been used in over 11,000 citations and are inherently reliable due to the simple mechanism. They are widely used in CNS applications and are considered the gold standard in this area. In fact most often perceived failure is something else which is implying the pumps are not working. For example it is impossible to quantify whether they are working visually. The flow rates are so slow that evaporation (in the priming environment) or within a catheter would imply it is not working, when it is. Anyways, I'd love to hear more about your situation and offer some relevant suggestions. If you'd like, you can e-mail me at alzet@durect.com
