E.Coli expressing GFP - (Nov/09/2009 )

Hi,

I have an E.Coli strain, expressing GFP, and I'd like to know if it's possible to actually see "green cells" when I use the UV.

thanks

If it's expressed at a high enough level, yes.

Just be aware that it is not a good marker for selecting clones as the time you expose them to UV to pick the cells will cause irreversible DNA damage.

Expose them to blue light instead of UV is OK

ok thanks for the answer. I just needed to check the expression of the GFP. I looked at it under the UV and the cells did glow.
It was just out of curiosity, I didn't use it to select or confirm anything.
