low od260/230 for rna - (Oct/27/2009 )

hi
can anyone tell me what does a low 260/230 od for RNA mean????
does a high 230 od reflect higher polysaccharide levels in the extracted rna???

thanks

absoption at 230 nM is usually an organic contaminants such as thiocyanates or phenolate ions. Did you purify your RNA with a kit? Some of the RNA prep kits with throw in guanidine thiocyanate to prevent DNAse and RNAse activity. This can sometimes show up in the final RNA
