Coomasie Blue Staining of Protein Gels
(Dr. William H. Heidcamp, Biology Department, Gustavus Adolphus College)
Coomasie Brilliant Blue R 250 is the most commonly used staining procedure for the detection of proteins. It is the method of choice if SDS is used in the electrophoresis of proteins, and is sensitive for a range of 0.5 to 20 micrograms of protein.

Cupric Chloride Staining : for SDS-PAGE gels
(Mike A Dyer)
This protocol is 2-3 times more sensitive than coomasie blue staining, it is much quicker, and the gels can be stored at 4° for many months without protein degredation.

Imidazole-SDS-Zinc Staining of SDS-PAGE Gels
(Amanda Gillespie)
Brief introduction, references, recipes and step-by-step protocol.
Imidazole–SDS–zinc staining is simpler to perform than silver staining and may be completed in less than 20 min for most 1D mini–gels.
Imidazole–SDS–zinc staining is more sensitive than CBB and silver staining, and manifests the less protein-staining variability. Imidazole–SDS–zinc staining, unlike SYPRO Ruby and CBB, is rapid and, because no fixative is used, is also completely reversible, making it compatible not only with downstream analysis by mass spectrometry and Edman sequencing, but also with immunoelution/western blotting techniques.
