It depends.  If you streaked for isolation with a wire and ended up with a lawn, that's certainly mysterious.  If you spread an aliquot of liquid with cells in it, then the lawn makes more sense.  If that is the case, I suggest diluting your liquid sample with a bit of growth medium.  Maybe try a few plates, at 1/10, 1/100, ect.  Those would probably give distinct colonies.
