Are Bacillus & Staphylococcus Considered LAB?

09 February 2013 - 07:51 PM

Is the genera Bacillus, and Staphylococcus specifically Bacillus cereus and Staphylococcus aureus considered lactic acid bacteria? I googled it, and found that S. aerus is, but thought I should check here to be really sure.

Thanks!

Best Way To Prepare Sodium Bicarbonate Solution

12 December 2012 - 01:02 PM

Hello,

I'm trying to prepare 20% sodium bicarbonate solution, and I'm having trouble getting it to dissolve. I placed 10g in 50 mL DI water, and the solution is just very cloudy. Since I can't heat it, is there another way to dissolve it? I plan on filter sterilzing it afterwards.

Thanks!

Can medium containing starch be autoclaved?

21 November 2012 - 08:18 AM

I know that you have to be careful with sugars as they can carmalize, but what about starch? I prepared media with starch and after I autoclaved it, I noticed a gelatinous substance at the bottom. I'm assuming that is the starch?

Is 27F and Anti-Gamma Primer the same thing for 16s?

05 November 2012 - 08:59 AM

I've been trying to research to see if the primer 27F and Anti-Gamma primer are the same thing, but when I try to google Anti-Gamma primer, I don't get anything relevant to my search.

I have an isolate that did not amplify with 8F and 1492R, so I thought I would try 27F and 1492R, but we don't have any primers labeled 27F in our primer box. We do have one labeled "Anti-Gamma" and I wondered if that was the same thing.

Thanks!

Purpose Of Fatty Acids In Media

29 October 2012 - 08:16 PM

What is the purpose of having a fatty acid solution in media?

Also, I'm a little confused by the term enrichment vs media. For enrichments, that would consist of trying different subtrates for the microbial growth, correct? ie glucose, sucrose, etc? Media would then be used once the organism of interest has been isolated correct? Preparing media that contains the substrate for more favorable growth?
