#146676 What file format has "Kindle edition"?

Posted hobglobin on 13 December 2012 - 12:02 PM

Kindle has its own file format azw- or whatever it is called, and a Kindle edition is made to be used by kindle then (and only Kindle, nothing else)....early Kindles did not even accept normal pdfs, but you had to send the pdf to amazon that they converted it (or not, I guess copyright issues were the reason and of course politics to force you to have an exclusive provider Posted Image ).
More modern Kindle versions accept now pdfs, but no idea if there is still some copyright check and worries.
Anyway for me it was always a reason not to buy it as I'd like to read my papers with it and didn't want to send them to amazon and I'd perhaps also like to get ebooks from other sources except amazon...

#144990 Column number code of EXCEL

Posted pcrman on 10 November 2012 - 09:25 AM

I guess you need a simple script to convert the alphabetic code to numeric.

ATE = (26 x 26 +1) + (26 x 20) + 5  = 1202 (I hope my calculation is right)

another example:
IV = 265 = 9 x 26 + 22 = 256

You can do it directly in Excel if you are using Excel 2007 or above. See this video

high salt solution keeps for a while non-contaminated but better with NaN3 at RT

was it an anti-phospho antibody? milk contains a plenty of phospho-caseins...

What I do not understand is why TCA is used for resuspension? For SDS-PAGE a Leammli buffer is to use

#114521 Dissolving Calcium Chloride in PBS: How to Prevent Precipitation?

Posted bob1 on 07 July 2011 - 03:18 PM

You are probably forming CaHPO4 which is very insoluble in water... you will have to make a more dilute solution of Ca2+ as you will never be able to overcome this problem.

in addition to bob1: add stock solution of CaCl2 stepwise to PBS under stiring

#114681 Repellent of glasses for PAGE

Posted Inmost sun on 09 July 2011 - 12:08 PM

I think Sigmacoat is a silane diluted in organic phase; it works for glass but not alox plates (Hoefer); plates must be cleaned, then coated by rubbing a portion with cloth, shortly rinsed with distilled water and dried;

if Sigmacoat does not work in your case it seems to be too diluted for your purpose; you may repeat coating twice or more;

or buy pure silane (Sigma)and dilute with CCl4

But only if it's a disc image (then it's presumably a large file). But it can also be a file with general binary code (see your windows system folder). Or a data file that stored data as binary code (some population genetics software has it as results output). For these files I'd use an editor (results) or hexeditor (binary file, here you might get an idea which program produced this file)....QuickView Plus, hexedit, notepad would be my ideas.

#114132 How to be good at the bench

Posted Inmost sun on 03 July 2011 - 08:41 AM

being good at bench needs various inputs;
however, an important thing is:

when I started with lab work as a student assistant I tried to learn from EVERYONE in the lab; so, a close contact to your lab mates is essential i.m.p.o.v.

#114125 Detecting phosphoproteins

Posted Inmost sun on 03 July 2011 - 08:14 AM

induced phosphorylations normally exhibit typical kinetics which is not a linear increase but Koshland kinetics; so it is extremely important to have the kinetics of phosphorylation under control

donīt you think that parallel use of two antibodies may affect each other? the polyclonal may compete with the monoclonal for the same epitope?
