lame answers - only fools use/accept wikipedia as a scientific ref.

H1N1 refers to a subtype of influenza A virus comprised of the surface proteins hemagglutinin 1 and neuraminidase 1. H1N1 subtype was responsible for the Spanish flu pandemic of 1918 and for swine flu.

I wasn't using it as a scientific reference and specifically didn't say "reference"! Try reading posts correctly. Besides, in respects of the question the wikipedia article was quite correct and I checked that before posting it.

Not that 20 seconds worth of google search couldn't have found the OP's answer - basic response for basic question.
