There was a reasonable cleared ara around the observatory, but we Aussies do like to be attached to the bush, and it is in a national park.

I heard yeaterday that the air temp during the fire went over 100 C, which is pretty damn warm, and eucalypts tend to send embers exploding into the air, which travel 10-50 km to drop down and set off spot fires. Gotta love this country: so many ways to kill you, from the trees to the animals, insects and fish!
