How relative abundance of V genes helps in clonal lineage determination

Could anyone explain to me how the relative abundance of V genes in the IGH and TRB loci could help in clonal lineage determination? I understand that usually the CDR3 is used for this, but the V genes only contribute a few base pairs towards the CDR3. I'd appreciate any insight, thanks!
