Dear all,
I need ur advice in an ethical and career question.
I like my boss, he is so intelligent, however he has some issues, like he is a bite miserly specially when we buy chemicals
But even that, i really like working with him.
I don't know if my contract will be renewed or not after next July, it depends on how I will be able to finalize my current project.
so I want to apply for a new job, but If my contract is renewed, I want to continue with him, 
but from his personality, he will not take this decision, unless near the deadline ( almost 2 months before my contract ends).
so what do u think from ethical point of view? shall I apply.
u may know that if I told him I am applying for other jobs he may take -ve decision regarding the renewal.
 What about the other employer, if I apply and get accepted then I say, Sorry; I will continue with my current job.
Please give me ur sincere advice,

In your case, I would apply for other jobs to be on the safe side...I'd say you don't need to tell your boss about it if he always renews contracts only at short notice. I would not be too worried about doing that - as far as I know people are doing it all the time; blame it on the system....

The problem with this is: what if they look for a reference and they contact his current boss?

 

I do not know what kind of job she is looking for, but it is likely a reference will be asked and contacted if its an academical/researchfunction.

is there any possibility that your mentor will discuss it with you and let you know if he's leaning towards keeping you?

 

or he may want you to expand your horizons and move on.

I think the best way is to be direct and ask, if he is interested in renewing your contract.

No. Ask if he is willing to stand as a referee for you and start applying. 

 

You have made your side clear. You are applying because, he is not willing to renew the contract! 

 

 

To be honest: I came to the post hoping to get a scoop of unethical activities in a foreign lab. 

 

Madelin, it is completely normal to apply for new jobs, while working at one. It is not a question about your ethics.
