Well, not exactly just because of you (that was just a tease )What I actually meant was that if there are only two of us left, then it's probably better to stop with the thread but if there are other people interested to participate, then of course, we can continue....it is really a fun (and very informative) game....

as for a clue...it's my usual: look beyond europe... and bob is on the right track (but it's not from Rushdie's)...

In English but Indian Author.  I don't think it is Vikram Seth.  Could be VS Naipaul, but I only know A house for Mr Biswas, and it certainly doesn't sound right for that.

Agree on that, the only other who comes to my mind is Kipling, but I think he didn't published anything notable in the 20th century...

yup...it's from EM Forster's A Passage to India..that passage I quoted was the ending of the book and actually the "it" refers to the friendship between the colonial Brit and the native Indian.....even nature said no, not yet (not while the Brits still ruled) and not there (perhaps in another place...who knows...)....and finally, it's bob's turn again.....
