Oooh close.  This is an author who once said that the Nobel committee had made it a habit not to award him the prize. Blinded by his brilliance I am sure!

Vargas Llosa could have said it too before 2010 .....but yup, Borges could have written the quote and he's brilliant and "humble", very innovative, a genius...for sure, it's from one of the stories in Ficciones but I don't think it's The Garden...my alltime favourite is The Secret Miracle but I don't think the quote is from there....

first my idea was Mark Twain (but did Nobel prizes exist at his time?) anyway now it's more José Saramago with Blindness (though I could not remember this scenery in the book or film)

nope, I'm pretty sure it's Borges now...from your post actually dr H.....the Nobel committee or was it Jorges (whomever bob meant) was "blinded" by his brilliance....bob is soo good in giving clues...

Author correct - he was blind in his later years.  The story appears in Ficciones so Casey was correct there.  Now which one...you'll get it in the end!

actually, Tabs got the author (from your Nobel clue) and his progressive blindness was the reason why they migrated to Geneva- to get treatment...it's not from his fantastical/surrealistic/hypertext stories so I guess it's from the regular "gaucho" ones?
