Yes, thats it ! The paragraph concerns the conceited Toad right after he has escaped from prison. And the American author I referred to was Graham Greene.

Il dort. Quoique le sort fût pour lui bien étrange,
Il vivait. Il mourut quand il n'eut plus son ange;
La chose simplement d'elle-même arriva,
Comme la nuit se fait lorsque le jour s'en va.

and a new one, English 20th century:

What sphinx of cement and aluminum bashed open their skulls and ate up their brains and imagination? Moloch! Solitude! Filth! Ugliness! Ashcans and unobtainable dollars! Children screaming under the stairways! Boys sobbing in armies! Old men weeping in the parks!

That is....if she posts at all.

sounds expressionistic, but I didn't find any english language authors so far...

La chose simplement d'elle-même arriva,

How about Thomson's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas then ? Lots of drugs there...

well I think it's from the same tradition but earlier and not so exuberant amounts and diversity of drugs biggrin.png

Could be The Doors of Perception by Huxley (isn't it rather spiritual though ?) but I would rather go for Burroughs - Junkie or Naked Lunch.

Finally I think I found it, a poem: Allan Ginsberg - Howl (not that I searched the entire three weeks for it since the last post though laugh.png )

By the way: This thread is celebrating its first birthday today biggrin.pngbiggrin.pngbiggrin.png

Funny, I thought exactly the same when I posted this. But there is always the option of revival happy.png

Here's a new quote, for whoever wants to take part smile.png

English, 21st century

I went to the doctor after falling down some stairs, but all he said was “Lay off the beer.” I became even more clumsy after moving to Cambridge.

Il dort. Quoique le sort fût pour lui bien étrange,
Il vivait. Il mourut quand il n'eut plus son ange;
La chose simplement d'elle-même arriva,
Comme la nuit se fait lorsque le jour s'en va.
