I'm in a new lab and there's a microscope that displays an absolutely horrid image.  I looked at where the light from the condenser was hitting the objective and its is way off.  This needs to me centered and have Kohler illumination done on it, correct?

Correct, that should help.  It would also probably pay to make sure that the lenses are clean - Isopropanol on a lens tissue will get rid of lens oil.
