as with all post translational modifications, pe conjugated to a protein changes its mass and 3 dimensional representation (size), as well as its charge characteristics.
it will also have an effect on the binding of sds to the protein molecule.
the difference in mass and sds binding will have an effect on mobility in sds-page.
