Hi guys, I'm just studying the procedure of RNase protection assay (as described here http://vet.sagepub.c...ent/39/1/2.full )

I don't understand why during the electropheresis step why part of the original probe is also run down the gel in lane 1, and the dsRNA is run down in lane 2 ..? What does the running down of a segement of the original probe show in comparison? Is it so that it corresponds to the lane 2 result if you have multiple probes?

An explanation in layman's terms would be great :)
