Normally they are used to know the function of an unknown gene.why should we produce congenic strains to know the function of a gene.why can't we know the function of a gene in originl strain itself. What is the advantage and methodology.

You can work on the function of the gene in the original strain, but with the congenic you have only the region/gene changed in the recipient, so that you can assume that any changes from the parent recipeint strain are due to the changed region/gene, making it easier to determine the function of the region/gene in a functional manner.
