what could be the reasons for horizontal smearing in SDS-PAGE??

in general, salts, lipids, detergents, etc in the sample.

a picture and more information would help to determine the specific cause.

Horizontal smearing would most likely be due to too much sample loaded in the wells causing side-by-side bands to merge?
