The ones I know are the fungi, basidiomycetes, that grow on trees. I don't how exactly they're called but goes something like "white decaying" because of the color of the wood. Examples are Pleurotus ostreatus and Lentinus edodes. There are other microorganisms besides fungi who can degrade lignin

Certain lignin degrading microbes have been patented because they secrete lignin hydrolases, esterases and oxidases. Search www.attc.org for a listing using keyword 'lignin'. You will get research references.
