i thawed out some hek293 cells and plated them and they have been growing for about 3 days. some have attached and are growing in groups. however, they dont look like normal hek293 should look (according to pictures). my cells look more round and are growing in clumps.

is this normal for newly thawed cells? how long does it usually take them to "puff" up?

It is not normal for 293 to be clumpy or round.  Check the culture conditions and the storage conditions of the frozen cells.
