Hi,
Anyone knows the difference between c.p phenol and phenol? C.p phenol is one of the ingredient to make
carbol-xylene , a clearing agent for stain. I'm trying to make the solution up but not sure what c.p stands for.
Tried googling but to no avail.
Thanks!
what is c.p phenol?

Our country has a serious deficiency in lighthouses. I assume the main reason is that we have no sea.
I never trust anything that can't be doubted.

As for the "CP", it could mean that the material used in the original formulation was of a purity defined by the Chinese Pharmacopoeia. Maybe your recipe comes from an asian publication? CP is a standard abbreviation and is used in a similar manner as USP (which is a publication that describes approved chemicals/drugs in the United States).
Hope this helps.

Thanks KlinMed for ur recipe... and the rest who has responded. From your replies, I would gather that it is Chemically Pure (ref..Trof, 2010
).
I actually got the method from Sass, 1958 ( fastgreen and safranin stain protocol). Thanks all again!

Could someone also explain to me what is the function of cp phenol (carbo-xylene)? As in what is the function of a clearing agent?
To get rid of water?
This is my protocol and I was thinking of skipping step 6 but before doing so would like to know how essential it is.
1. Stain in aqueous safranin 1-12hr (time depends on specimen) – Try 5 mins, 30mins
2. Rinse in water till no safranin bleeds from specimen
3. Dehydrate rapidly through 30, 50, 70 to 95% (1 min each)
4. Stain in fast green fro 5-30 Secs
5. Dehydrate rapidly through 2 X 2mins changes of absolute ethanol
6. Transfer to carbol-xylene (1 vol of melted c.p.phenol and 3 volumes of xylene) for 5 min ( 1:1 methyl salicylate: xylene)
7.Clear in 100% xylene
8. Mount in synthetic mountant
Thanks heaps for any help.
