what is the difference between yield and protein concentration?
can someone help me to define this?
thanks

Hi anasyida,
Yield is the total amount of protein you end up with.
Concentration is the amount of protein in a certain volume of solution.
For example:
You've purified your protein and ended up with 30 ml of solution containing your protein.
Then you check to see with a spectrophotometer how much protein is in 1 ml of solution.
Let's say you find that you have 2 mg/ml
So your current concentration is 2mg of protein per ml of solution.
To figure your yield - multiply 30 ml by 2mg/ml and you have 60 mg of protein.

P.S.
You may read in papers that people describe yield has how much protein they got from growing cells in a certain volume of media.
Using the examples above:
Let's say you grew 1L of cells and purified the cell extracts which yielded 60mg of protein.
So your yield is 60mg per liter of cell culture.
