I am about to start in vitro work with plant extracts that could have immunomodulatory effects as part of my PhD. Most of the published papers use fresh PBMC from blood donors. I have looked on the ATCC site and found a semi-continuous monocyte/macrophage (CRL-9855). Obtaining fresh blood on a regular basis would be very difficult. Has anyone used these cells before in immunomodulatory work?

At the risk of being biased and promotional, you could purchase PBMC from Astarte Biologics (www.astartebio.com)  We cryopreserve our PBMC and they behave the same as fresh when they are thawed and put into culture.  We also have purified monocytes.  One of our customers has used THP-1 (also available from ATCC) and confirmed their results using monocytes from Astarte Biologics.  So there are some options for you.  Good luck!
