Since I've not a PI yet and am not in charge of any such financial worries directly at the moment, I had some questions about lab funding. What would happen if someone wanted to donate a significant amount of money to a lab for their research? For example, we study cell biology here and of course it relates to some diseases etc... What if some philanthropist or just any old regular Joe wanted to give us or any other lab in the US money for research they were interested in? Here we are at a University and I assume it would be different donating to a University versus some private company. Is that even possible? Is it some kind of tax-deductible donation? Would it affect your chances of getting other government or private grants? Hopefully I'll have a successful career and get plenty of grants so I'll never have to worry about that <_<, but I was curious. I know we can give money to charitable organizations like the MACC fund or something (which used to partially fund my old lab's research) but what if we want to cut out the middleman or make sure a lab we are really interested in gets help? What if I get rich someday and my child gets into research and I want to leave him and his lab some money in my will? Who knows. Anyone here care to enlighten on the subject?

Thanks.
