Why beagles are so important for drug discovery? why this dog species and not an other?

Beagles became a popular research animal due to their medium size and friendly disposition.  While there are a few popular lines of research beagles, other breeds and mixes contribute to biomedical research.  For example, the world's first cloned dog was an Afghan hound.  

Don't forget that in terms of lives sacrificed, rats & mice contribute far more to scientific discovery than typical companion animal species. :D
