Hi all..
Can anyone tell me how to discard acrylamide gels presuming i dont have a government run service tat will collect all harardous waste from my lab!!!

We collect the polymerized acrylamide gel in a plastik flask and dispose it with the normal lab disposal. If the acrylamide is polimerized it shouldn't be hazardous.

we throw polymerized acrylamide gels into the regular garbage. there is no need to pay extra to remove them from the lab.
and, yes, we are heavily regulated and this is appropriate.

What about incinerate the gel ? is it safe?

This I won't do in a lab..only in a kind of furnace. The polyacrylamide contains nitrogen and to incinerate it with lab equipment (e.g. bunsen burner) will produce a whole zoo of chemicals, as well toxic (such as nitrogen oxides) as non-toxic (if it works perfect only CO2 and water)...

I see, this is because we discard into incineration bins which will be incinerated by our university hired company. I Not sure how they burn it, but i hope the gas will not be simply release into the air and then pollute the environment.
