hi dersven,
i predict most people will be using windows, since it is the os installed by default in most computers. macosx is pretty but expensive, and linux can be pretty but it's not widespread. i've seen mainly postdocs using macs.
madrius1
Here in Quebec (Canada), almost every PI are using Macs. Sexier of course, and as they claim, more effective and working a lot better than Windows. But they all have problem when talk-time arrives smile.gif

I use Windows!
gebirgsziege
Windows....used to it since ages....so it is some kind of habit; used to the problems it brings along and developed avoidance strategies wink.gif
mdfenko
i use both macosx and windows (nt4, 2kpro, xppro, vista).

macosx and vista at home, others at work.

Windows but only because I'm used to it. Linux will be the replacement for the future.

OMG a LUSER tongue.gif

OMG..I had to google this acronym dry.gif ...I'd call you a BOFH but although the B, F and H are befitting- luckily you're not an operator smile.gif ..also just a user like me....so you're BUFH....

Btw, here's a profound philosophical question:

Why is it only drug dealers and software developers call their clients 'users'?

I converted from Windows to Mac about 3 years ago and love it. And the change wasn't very difficult at all. I would never switch back to a PC unless I need to for certain programs. Although Macs are a bit more expensive, for me, it's worth it.

I don't think that German biologists are necessarily lazy (in regards to Windows)....the exposure to Windows (and the market) is much bigger there than in the US (as far as I remember). I never considered owning a Mac while I was living in Germany.

Windows in work and MacOS at home, I didn't vote since you can't choose 2 wink.gif

Perhaps the issue is more with the IT setup. The two institutes in our little precinct happily run both mac and Wintel, but the PC people have problems than the Mac people (I'm for Mac!); it's rare to see the BSOD (blue screen of death for casandra wink.gif ) with the macs.

There are fewer viruses for MacOS than window.
HomeBrew
Too bad you can't choose more than one OS -- at home, I have XP on four machines, Linux on two machines, and Vista on one, and I have two XP and two Linux at the lab. Mac's OS is essentially Linux (well, Unix actually) with a pretty GUI...

I have always been using Windows and never had any problem (that I could not solve tongue.gif ) so will stick to Windows. But, the computer I got here does not speak English and I switched to Linux. I still have Windows though as WinMDI does not function well with Wine.(nor sake) It will be hard for me to downgrade to Mac any time in future.

I still support Microsoft as some part of the money I might spend (or I encourage others to spend biggrin.gif ) goes here I suppose - affects lives of millions.

Hm, the old and the contemporary windows looks different...

I have two mac laptops - one running Tiger the other running leopard (which is excellent & has mouse pad gestures). Both have vmware on - vmware has XP and linux installed under it so I have access to both of those. My desktop pc is dual boot - running XP and linux (I change between fedora/ubuntu/gentoo/suse).

after watching the futuristic video posted by BB i've been wondering how many people will be able to use that technology, and i don't mean by the access to these devices but by just looking around i have seen lots of people frustrated by using the 'mighty mouse' by apple, i can't imagine those people using only touch screens biggrin.gif

another video i found interesting, and closer to reality, by Davind Merril at MIT: the siftables

my friends switched from windows to mac, but i am too lazy and just stick with windows.

ok then....I am all for competition and anything that can possibly kill off iPhone would make me happy too smile.gif . However, it can't have more features than iPhone which can practically do everything even your taxes... so what's the catch? It can't be free....

it's not (as far as i know)
perlmunky
It is more feature rich than the iphone - for a start it has copy and paste as well as running multiple apps running at once. Oh and the dev kit is going to give developers full hooks into the system.

perlmunk, I just googled this Palm WebOs..it's not even out yet and accdg to the ad, if it gets priced at 150 usd, then it's gonna kill iPhone but more than likely, it'd fetch between 200 to 300 dollars. That's quite expensive for me but I also saw that Ericksson's X-peria costs about 800 bucks....how can you justify a a gadget costing this much and why is this a lot more expensive than the rest of the pack? 800? To "stay connected" 24 hrs a day? PPfftt...what is wrong with the world these days? oh, but maybe I'm just sour-graping bec I only have a DumbPhone laugh.gif and it's turned off most of the time or low batteries...but really? These phones are that expensive?

What?

Aren't you in Canada? You lot won't see it for another 2 years (after Europe) wink.gif
They get heavily subsidised over here so most phones are free or max £30 ($30! us) - the exception that proves the rule is the iPhone. I want mobile internet so I can call people on all the bullshit they make up when I talk to them. Phones and PDAs are the same thing now - mini netbooks?!

M$ winXP at lab, but BSD in my own laptop .... I'm the only one voted "Other"?! blink.gif
aquilea_bk
As all in our lab are using Mac I've also been kind of converted to Mac. Still running Windows at home though. But I'm not exactly missing a lot on Mac - except maybe Solitare etc. wink.gif
noelmathur
exactly as aquilea_bk, except that Solitaire thing.
Thought of switching to Ubuntu but got really nasty help on the forum.
Completely switching to mac is not a deal due to the costs involved. Its too much of money for a machine that will not last for more than 3 years (due to technology or whatever other reason) I don't do any high end computation that I need such a powerful machine. Similar spec windows machines cost pretty less.

Only hassle is maintenance of windows machine, but I am ready to accept that hassle for costs and as a grad student, you don't have much money, do you? (Apple is not that cheap in Europe for students, for academic institutions, no VAT but not for students)

At the end, do you manage to get your job done? yes, move on.. wink.gif
