SP-sepharose column - can this make column "out of order" ? (Apr/12/2005 )

at the work with a SP-Sepharose column chromatography , proteins stick tightly to column and do not elute with the salt gradient .
even with the 1.5M NaCl some proteins remain in the column and we have to wash the sp sepharose with 1M NaOH . can this make the column "out of order" ?
what should I do?

According to the manual of resin of Pharmacia, the sp-sephorose can be cleaned with 1M NaOH.
