Why does DMSO turn tissue black? - (Jul/11/2008 )
I've been trying to treat cartilage tissue with some MAPK inhibitors, which need to be dissolved in DMSO. A lot of people have tried it on cell cultures and they worked fine. But when I used the same concentration on the tissue culture, all the cartilage samples turned from white to brownish black, including the ones only had DMSO without the inhibitors as a control. Does anyone know why??? Thanks!!!

I do not know but I assume that one reason could be complexes of sulphoxide with iron ions; is anything know about iron ions in cartilage?
