Only 18S RNA Band shows up in RNA gel, why? - (Nov/30/2007 )

Hi there,

I isolated RNA from 5 different samples today and ran an RNA gel to check the quality. In two of the samples I saw only the 18S RNA band. What exactly does this mean? I thought that degradation would be also for 18S RNA?
After isolation I left the samples 3 hours on ice to prepare the gel and heated them at 65 °C for 3 min prior to loading them.

Thanks, chalet2

mRNA degrades faster than ribosomal RNA. I hope the buffer you run ur RNA gels in is also clean.

u run agarose gel or FA gel??
FA gel is formaldehyde RNA gel...
if run RA gel, mostly the things will be ok ...
